Research Opportunities

Floracliff provides a field site where scientists can conduct research on the plants, animals, geology, ecology, history, and land management practices unique to the sanctuary. Researchers from several universities and institutions have used Floracliff for their projects. Floracliff staff facilitate these projects through site orientations and assistance with permits.

Advancing Conservation Through Research

Through the variety of research projects conducted at Floracliff, we have gained a greater understanding of the sanctuary’s biodiversity, natural history, and management impacts. Past and current research projects include:

  • inventories of plants, herps, birds, invertebrates, bryophytes, and lichens
  • studies of ecological relationships between species
  • deployment of camera traps
  • collection of tree cores for dendrochronology
  • acoustic monitoring of bats
  • collection of soil samples
  • collection of seed for germplasm conservation
  • studies on the impacts of land management
  • collection of paleoclimate data

Those interested in conducting research projects at Floracliff are welcome to submit proposals. Most research projects will also require approval by the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves. Please email Preserve Director, Beverly james at bjames@floracliff.org for permit applications and additional information about the application process.
