SUMMARY:Floracliff’s Sentinels: A tour of the sanctuary’s old oak trees
DESCRIPTION:Meet some of Kentucky’s oldest trees on this hike at Floracliff.\n\n\nFloracliff’s forested ravines are home to some of the oldest known trees in Kentucky. This hike will feature some of these 17th- and 18th-century chinquapin oaks. We will discuss the characteristics of old trees\, how trees are aged\, as well as the significance and ecology of Floracliff’s old oaks. This hike will also include a break at Elk Lick Falls. \nHike Leader: Beverly James\, Preserve Director \nHiking Level: Moderate to Difficult\, due to steep\, uneven terrain and potential creek crossings \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera \nThe meeting location will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program. \nThis program is generously sponsored by David and Kathy Rees Johnson to make attendance free for all participants.

SUMMARY:Plein Air Painting & Drawing
DESCRIPTION:Join fellow artists on a hike to a scenic spot within Floracliff to draw and paint over 4 hours.\n\n\nJoin fellow artists on a hike to a scenic spot within Floracliff to draw and paint over 4 hours. Artists provide their own materials and must pack in and out over varying terrain as a group. This is not an instructional workshop\, but an opportunity to work independently on artwork for 3 ½ hours. All sessions end with an opportunity for artists to share their work with others. Open to ages 16 and up. \n*Bring your preferred painting and drawing supplies \n*Ground cloth or seat\, water and snacks\, insect repellent\, sun hat \n*Everyone will pack their materials in and out\, sometimes a distance of 1/2 to 3/4 mile with moderate difficulty. \nSession hosts: Steve Bennett and Laura Mentor \nSteve has been drawing all his life. He has over 20 years’ experience teaching/guiding students of many ages in drawing and 3-D design. His love of Nature has recently led to new branches of learning and appreciation for the rich complexities of the natural world. \nLaura has developed her eye for Nature’s treasures through a lifetime of hiking\, observation and research. She has been creating large scale installations of her ornate\, narrative stained glass windows for public buildings and private clients for over 25 years. Her ongoing research into native species and their relationships have informed her recent work. Examples may be viewed at www.lauramentor.com. \nSteve and Laura are regular program volunteers at Floracliff. \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. The meeting location for this program will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program.

SUMMARY:The Natural Word: Nature Journaling at Floracliff
DESCRIPTION:Hone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we use our words to explore Floracliff in different seasons.\n\n\nHone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we use our words to explore Floracliff in different seasons. These hikes will give you permission to sit and soak in the life around you and open your senses to appreciate and imagine a bit of each creature’s sensory environment or study the intricate beauty in a stone or a leaf. Whether you’ve nature journaled for years\, or this is your first foray\, all are welcome. We will have specific tasks during each hike that will give you a structure on which to build your thoughts. There will be an opportunity to share our entries at the end of each session\, but there is no pressure to do so. The idea behind these sessions is to slow down\, stretch our senses\, and appreciate the natural world in a nonjudgmental gathering. \nDuring times of cold or rainy weather\, the writing portion of the program may move indoors. \nProgram Leader: Carol Spence\, Floracliff Volunteer \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water\, a mat to sit on \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nThis program is recommended for adults and youth ages 12 and older. \nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. The meeting location for this program will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program.

SUMMARY:FLOC: First Friday Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join us for birding with the Floracliff Ornithology Community (FLOC)!\n\n\nStart your day with an easy-paced bird walk. Experienced birders will guide you on a 1-2 mile loop through grassland and forested habitat. We’ll take our time to document all the birds we see and hear during this community science based program. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair from our collection. \n\n\nSupport Floracliff with a Donation \nFloracliff depends on community support to offer these free events. Your donations support programs to promote knowledge and appreciation of nature and projects to protect\, steward\, and monitor the sanctuary and its wildlife. You can easily donate online at Floracliff.org. \n\n\nWhat is FLOC? \nFLOC (Floracliff Ornithology Community) was established in 2018 as a monthly community science project to document Floracliff’s bird diversity and seasonal changes. These free bird walks are led by advanced birders who are also trained Floracliff volunteers. It offers a fun opportunity for beginner and intermediate birders to to learn from others and for advanced birders to pass along their knowledge and experience. Over the years\, FLOC has developed established route(s) to maintain a systematic approach to collecting data. All FLOC observations are shared to eBird. \n\n\nBirdwatching Guidelines & Ethics \nThe American Birding Association (ABA) states “Birding should be fun and help build a better future for birds\, for birders\, and for all people”. As FLOC outreach continues to grow\, we want these outings to remain enjoyable and educational for birders of all levels\, while also minimizing impact to the birds being observed. The ABA provides a comprehensive Code of Birding Ethics found here. In short\, we expect those attending FLOC outings to minimize disturbance to birds and fellow birders by practicing the following: \n\nMinimize habitat disturbances by staying on the trail.\nThe use of audio recordings should be limited and at the discretion of the FLOC leader(s).\nBe mindful and cautious around active nests; give them space.\nDocument birds honestly.\nBe respectful of the interests\, rights\, and skill levels of fellow birders by keeping conversations quiet and helping others spot and learn about birds in the field.

SUMMARY:Intro to Winter Tree ID – Looking at all the clues
DESCRIPTION:Join botanist Rob Paratley to learn how to identify trees without their leaves.\n\n\nMany people think that identifying trees after they’ve dropped their leaves is a difficult challenge. Most guides focus on leaf form and arrangement. In this workshop we will learn that there are other clues to tree identification that\, if you know what to look for\, are just as reliable as growing season leaves. The winter tree ID workshop will have three parts; 1) a visual guide with slides to how to look at trees in the winter\, 2) an indoor exercise using collected samples to observe important distinguishing features of the twigs\, buds\, and the scars left by the shed leaves. If you have any kind of magnifier\, especially a 10x field lens\, bring it to the workshop. 3) We will also try to identify them using a reference book for winter ID. Then we will take a hike on the Floracliff trails to see if we can use tree form\, bark\, twigs (if we can reach them) and hanging or dropped fruit as clues to tree identification. \nProgram Leader: Rob Paratley\, Curator of the University of Kentucky Herbarium \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. The meeting location for this program will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program.

SUMMARY:The Natural Word: Valentine's Nature Journaling at Floracliff
DESCRIPTION:Hone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we explore Floracliff and write a Valentine to Nature!\n\n\nHone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we use our words to explore Floracliff in different seasons.

These free bird walks are led by advanced birders who are also trained Floracliff volunteers. It offers a fun opportunity for beginner and intermediate birders to to learn from others and for advanced birders to pass along their knowledge and experience. SUMMARY:Seminar: The Watershed Scale of Climate Change
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a seminar at the Trail’s End Lodge with Dr. Alice Jones\n\n\nPresenter: Dr. Alice Jones\, Chair Emerita\, EKU Department of Physics\, Geosciences & Astronomy \nWendell Berry once said\,“Our understandable wish to preserve the planet must somehow be reduced to the scale of our competence–that is to wish to preserve all of its humble households and neighborhoods.” Thinking about climate change through the nested hierarchy of waterways and watersheds—-the tiniest backyard tributaries merging into larger and larger streams and rivers at the regional and continental scale–helps us reduce the scale of a global challenge to a neighborhood and community scale. We’ll examine global and regional climate predictions in the Kentucky River and its nested tributary watersheds to better understand how a changing climate will affect both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in and around our “humble households and neighborhoods.” \nThis program is part of the Bluegrass Biodiversity Seminar Series\, which offers free evening presentations on Kentucky’s natural history and biodiversity in the historic Trail’s End Lodge. \nThis event is generously sponsored by Charles and Kim Sither so that all attendees can join for free.

SUMMARY:Canceled: FLOC: First Friday Birding
