She has been creating large scale installations of her ornate\, narrative stained glass windows for public buildings and private clients for over 25 years. Her ongoing research into native species and their relationships have informed her recent work. SUMMARY:Forests and Carbon: What’s the big deal?
DESCRIPTION:Join forest ecologist\, Dr. Mary Arthur\, on a hike to learn about the forest carbon cycle and why forests matter to a changing climate.\n\n\nSpend the morning learning how forests absorb and release carbon dioxide\, and why forests matter to the global cycling of carbon\, and therefore to changing climate. We will hike through parts of Floracliff’s mature forest as well as early successional post-agricultural forest\, as we think about the implications of forest management on forest carbon. \nProgram Leader: Dr. Mary Arthur\, Professor Emeritus – Forest Ecology\, University of Kentucky \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. SUMMARY:Winter Tree I.D. Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join botanist Rob Paratley to learn how to identify trees without their leaves.\n\n\nMany people think that identifying trees after they’ve dropped their leaves is a difficult challenge. Most guides focus on leaf form and arrangement. In this workshop we will learn that there are other clues to tree identification that\, if you know what to look for\, are just as reliable as growing season leaves. The winter tree ID workshop will have three parts; 1) a visual guide with slides to how to look at trees in the winter\, 2) an indoor exercise using collected samples to observe important distinguishing features of the twigs\, buds\, and the scars left by the shed leaves. If you have any kind of magnifier\, especially a 10x field lens\, bring it to the workshop. 3) We will also try to identify them using a reference book for winter ID. Then we will take a hike on the Floracliff trails to see if we can use tree form\, bark\, twigs (if we can reach them) and hanging or dropped fruit as clues to tree identification. \nProgram Leader: Rob Paratley\, Curator of the University of Kentucky Herbarium \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. The meeting location for this program will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program.

SUMMARY:The Natural Word: Nature Journaling at Floracliff
DESCRIPTION:Hone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we use our words to explore Floracliff in different seasons.\n\n\nHone your observational skills through journal writing\, as we use our words to explore Floracliff in different seasons. These hikes will give you permission to sit and soak in the life around you and open your senses to appreciate and imagine a bit of each creature’s umwelt or study the intricate beauty in a stone or a leaf. Whether you’ve nature journaled for years\, or this is your first foray\, all are welcome. We will have specific tasks during each hike that will give you a structure on which to build your thoughts. There will be an opportunity to share our entries at the end of each session\, but there is no pressure to do so. The idea behind these sessions is to slow down\, stretch our senses\, and appreciate the natural world in a nonjudgmental gathering. \nDuring times of cold or rainy weather\, the Trail’s End Lodge will be utilized for the writing portion of the program. \nProgram Leader: Carol Spence\, Floracliff Volunteer \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates. The meeting location for this program will be emailed to all registered participants a few days before the program.

SUMMARY:FLOC: First Friday Birding
DESCRIPTION:Join us for birding with the Floracliff Ornithology Community (FLOC)!\n\n\nStart your day with an easy-paced bird walk. Experienced birders will guide you on a 1-2 mile loop through grassland and forested habitat. We’ll take our time to document all the birds we see and hear during this community science based program. Bring binoculars or borrow a pair from our collection. \n\n\nSupport Floracliff with a Donation \nFloracliff depends on community support to offer these free events. Your donations support programs to promote knowledge and appreciation of nature and projects to protect\, steward\, and monitor the sanctuary and its wildlife. You can easily donate online at Floracliff.org. \n\n\nWhat is FLOC? \nFLOC (Floracliff Ornithology Community) was established in 2018 as a monthly community science project to document Floracliff’s bird diversity and seasonal changes. These free bird walks are led by advanced birders who are also trained Floracliff volunteers. It offers a fun opportunity for beginner and intermediate birders to to learn from others and for advanced birders to pass along their knowledge and experience. Over the years\, FLOC has developed established route(s) to maintain a systematic approach to collecting data. All FLOC observations are shared to eBird. \n\n\nBirdwatching Guidelines & Ethics \nThe American Birding Association (ABA) states “Birding should be fun and help build a better future for birds\, for birders\, and for all people”. As FLOC outreach continues to grow\, we want these outings to remain enjoyable and educational for birders of all levels\, while also minimizing impact to the birds being observed. The ABA provides a comprehensive Code of Birding Ethics found here. In short\, we expect those attending FLOC outings to minimize disturbance to birds and fellow birders by practicing the following: \n\nMinimize habitat disturbances by staying on the trail.\nThe use of audio recordings should be limited and at the discretion of the FLOC leader(s).\nBe mindful and cautious around active nests; give them space.\nDocument birds honestly.\nBe respectful of the interests\, rights\, and skill levels of fellow birders by keeping conversations quiet and helping others spot and learn about birds in the field.

\nDuring times of cold or rainy weather\, the writing portion of the program may move indoors. \nProgram Leader: Carol Spence\, Floracliff Volunteer \nHiking Level: moderate \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera\, binoculars \n\n\nFloracliff has multiple entry gates.
