SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge 2021: Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Floracliff is thrilled to bring the City Nature Challenge to Lexington. The City Nature Challenge is a global community science event that mobilizes urban residents and visitors to observe\, document\, and celebrate the wild plants\, animals\, and fungi in and around urban areas. This focused and collective effort increases our awareness and understanding of urban biodiversity around the world. \nThe City Nature Challenge began in 2016 and is organized annually by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In its first year\, the CNC was a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles to document wild biodiversity in urban areas using iNaturalist. It has since grown to over 300 participating cities in 40 countries. \nCity Nature Challenge 2021: Lexington will take place April 30th – May 3rd throughout Fayette County. Lexington residents and visitors are encouraged to photograph the wild nature around them and upload those photographs to iNaturalist. If you are within Fayette County\, your observations will automatically be added to the project. All identification skill levels are welcome. If you do not know what you are looking at\, it’s okay! Be sure to take and submit clear\, detailed photos so the iNaturalist community can contribute identifications. \nThere are many wild plants\, animals\, fungi\, and more to be found throughout Lexington. Together\, we can discover\, document\, and share Lexington’s biodiversity! \nTo join us at Floracliff for a City Nature Challenge event\, see our events page here: floracliff.org/events/ \nInformation about daily and 4-day challenges\, with chances to win prizes. \nIf you represent a community group that is interested in participating in the City Nature Challenge\, please email Beverly James\, bjames@floracliff.org\, to confirm your participation and partnership.\n \nQuestions? Email Beverly James: bjames@floracliff.org \n\n\nHow to participate in the City Nature Challenge: \n\nDownload the iNaturalist app on your smartphone. While we encourage the use of iNaturalist year-round\, only observations between April 30th and May 3rd will count for the Challenge.\n\nActivities to observe wild nature in Lexington:\n\n\nSet up a bird feeding station and/or bird bath.\nSet up a white sheet with a UV light at night to attract moths and other nocturnal insects.\nSet up cover boards\, such as pieces of plywood or old roofing tin. SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge: Nighttime Exploration
DESCRIPTION:Calling all community scientists! This program will focus on exploring Floracliff’s ponds and forest edges after dark for the City Nature Challenge. We’ll focus on discovering and documenting frogs\, moths\, and more. Each registered party must have at least one member who has\, or can create\, an iNaturalist account in advance of the program. Be prepared to photograph your findings and upload them to iNaturalist either during the program or by May 3rd. \nBring: water\, closed-toe shoes\, hiking stick (optional)\, camera or smart phone for taking pictures \nHike Leaders: Floracliff naturalists \nHiking level: Easy to Moderate \nPlease note: Bathrooms and facilities are currently closed to visitors. Please come prepared.  This hike will host no more than 14 participants\, who will be spread out at various stations (moth lights and ponds) \n\nCOVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES UPDATE: As of Tuesday\, April 27th\, the state of Kentucky as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated guidelines for small outdoor gatherings. Kentucky no longer requires a mask be worn outdoors for events of fewer than 1000 people. The CDC states the risk of COVID-19 spread is low in outdoor settings\, but also continues to recommend masks in settings where physical distance cannot be maintained. \nIn response to the current guidance\, Floracliff will not require fully-vaccinated individuals to wear masks during outdoor programs as long as adequate physical distance (6-feet) can be maintained between others outside of one’s household/pod. Floracliff continues to recommend unvaccinated individuals wear a mask throughout all programs\, especially when adequate physical distance cannot be maintained between others outside of one’s household/pod. \nAll program participants and Floracliff representatives\, both fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated\, should have a mask available during programs in the case that adequate physical distance cannot be maintained. We are happy to provide one to you if necessary. \n*These guidelines are subject to change at any time according to current state and CDC guidance. \n\nWe are offering City Nature Challenge programs for free\, however tax-deductible donations may be made during check-out. All donations support our work to care for the land and offer programs.

SUMMARY:Hike: Global Big Day Bird Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Put on your Community Scientist hat and join us in finding\, counting and identifying birds at Floracliff. One hike will focus on the upland areas including the grasslands and woodlands near the Nature Center and Trail’s End Lodge. The other hike will head down to the Kentucky River floodplain. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology organizes Global Big Day\, where more than 20\,000 birders from around the world unite in a single day to celebrate birds. We will report all our birds through eBird. \nHike Leader: Floracliff Naturalists \nHiking Level: Moderate to Difficult \n\nPlease note: Bathrooms and facilities are currently closed to visitors. Please come prepared.  Each hike will host no more than 5 participants plus hike leaders. \nCOVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES UPDATE: As of Tuesday\, April 27th\, the state of Kentucky as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated guidelines for small outdoor gatherings. \nRefund Policy: Refunds are permitted for cancellations made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event. To request a refund\, email info@floracliff.org. \n

SUMMARY:Central Bluegrass Summer Butterfly Count
DESCRIPTION:Floracliff is hosting and organizing the 5th annual Central Bluegrass Summer Butterfly Count with NABA – Central Kentucky. Community scientists and butterfly enthusiasts are encouraged to help us count and document butterflies at various locations throughout the Lexington count circle. All data will be submitted to the North American Butterfly Association. This count is one of 400+ butterfly counts throughout North America. These counts provide important information about the geographical distribution and relative population sizes of the species counted. Comparisons of the results across years can be used to monitor changes in butterfly populations and study the effects of weather and habitat change on North American butterflies. \nPre-registration is required to participate in the Central Bluegrass Butterfly Count. To confirm participation\, please complete this Google form by June 18th: https://forms.gle/729sSF22P9bd1iPYA \n\nConfirmed participants will receive a follow-up email with details about their assigned site(s) as well as the count form to use on the day of the count.

SUMMARY:Bearing Fruit: Dispersing Seeds and Tree Identification w/ Rob Paratley
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a good time to observe and consider the fruit that our native trees bear.  After flowering earlier in the season\, if pollination leads to fruit set\, our native trees will bear berries\, drupes\, capsules\, nuts\, winged samaras\, and other fruit types.  Each of these types is adapted to moving seed away from the mother tree and out into the environment.  Fruit is also very useful for honing our ID skills\, particularly in fall.  Often a hickory\, ash\, oak\, and many others can be correctly identified with a close look at its fruit. \nMeet with botanist Rob Paratley for a two-part program at Floracliff Nature Sanctuary.  We will have a look at a number of fruit types of native trees.  Then we will hike a portion of the Preserve to see some of the fruit of the trees and shrubs in the field. \nHike Leader: Rob Paratley\, University of Kentucky \nHike distances: ~3 miles; rated moderate to difficult\, due to steep and uneven terrain and potentially slick spots \nBring: water \nOptional: hiking poles\, snack\, camera \nCOVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES UPDATE: As of Tuesday\, April 27th\, the state of Kentucky as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated guidelines for small outdoor gatherings.
