SUMMARY:Learning the Language of Trees - Canceled
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dr. Neil Pederson \nTree rings provide precise annual and seasonal information on climate\, ecology\, and competition over several centuries. In this dendro-ecology workshop\, participants will learn the methods that tree ring scientists use to learn the language of trees. By the end of the day\, participants will learn how to interpret the information we get from tree rings over the long lives of trees and have experience coring a tree. \nIn this course we will:\n• visit the forest at Floracliff Nature Sanctuary to discuss ecology\, read the landscape history\, and learn how to identify the external characteristics of old trees\n• core representatives of a few key genera. Participants will later be exposed to the main wood anatomies of trees in the region of samples belonging to these genera.\n• understand many of the things that can be interpreted from tree rings\n• learn the laboratory techniques used to process cores\n• conduct lab work to age the trees and interpret their stories \nNeil Pederson’s research focuses on climate/forest dynamics and disturbance ecology. Neil earned his Ph.D. in forest ecology at Columbia University. He has been a forester\, professor\, and research professor before working at the Harvard Forest. Neil focuses on the ecology of temperate\, mesic forests including the eastern U.S.\, Spain\, East Asia\, and the Colchic Temperate Rainforest in Turkey and the Republic of Georgia. \nRefund Policy: Refunds are permitted for cancellations made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event. To request a refund\, email info@floracliff.org. \nWeather Policy: For the safety and enjoyment of our visitors\, all programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather\, including rain\, wind\, and severe weather warnings and advisories.

SUMMARY:Elk Lick Falls\, the Kentucky River Fault\, and the Evolution of the Kentucky River Gorge: A Geologist's Perspective
DESCRIPTION:Program Leader: Ralph Ewers\, Ph.D\, Emeritus Professor\, Eastern Kentucky University \nThe remarkable topography at Floracliff and Elk Lick Falls is the result of a series of geological events beginning some 400 million years ago with the epicontinental seas of the Ordovician Age. More recently the Kentucky River fault zone\, the continental glaciers of the Pleistocene Ice Age\, and the evolution of the Ohio River all have had their effects on Floracliff scenery. We will explore the remnants of the seas that covered the area and the rich marine fauna that lived then as well as the evidence for distant volcanoes during that time. With a visit to the falls and to the Kentucky River Gorge we will explore the reasons for their existence. Along the way we will see the effects of the Kentucky River Fault\, estimate its immense vertical displacement and see evidence for the river’s former existence as a meandering stream over 300 feet above its present position. \nThis program will feature sites within Floracliff as well as sites along nearby roads in Fayette and Madison Counties. \nHiking Level: Moderate to Difficult\, due to uneven terrain and distance \nCancellation/Refund Policy: To cancel your registration and request a refund\, please email info@floracliff.org at least 2 weeks before the event. \nImage: Kentucky Geological Survey

SUMMARY:Shrubs and Understory Trees of Central and Eastern Kentucky
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Rob Paratley\, University of Kentucky \nHiking Level: Moderate to Difficult \nApart from the major trees in our forests\, smaller woody plants add greatly to the diversity of our ecosystems. We can use the same skills and field characters that are used to identify the oaks\, maples\, and other major trees\, and apply them to learning the many understory woody plants that add to the complexity of our native vegetation. Understory shrubs and small trees can also help us understand a site’s soil characteristics and disturbance history. This workshop will include a morning hike at Floracliff and an afternoon hike in the Daniel Boone National Forest. \nWorkshop Cancellation/Refund Policy: To cancel your registration and request a refund\, please email info@floracliff.org at least 2 weeks before the event.

SUMMARY:Spiders of Kentucky: A Floracliff Field Studies Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dr. James Wagner\, Transylvania University \nHiking Level: Moderate \nSpiders are one of the most diverse groups of terrestrial invertebrates yet most people only seem to know of black widows\, brown recluses\, and wolf spiders. This workshop is designed to introduce you to the great diversity in spider forms and behaviors and train you to identify some of the common families of spiders. We will utilize a variety of collecting methods to create a specimen collection for the Floracliff preserve and we will identify our captures to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Since many spiders are nocturnal\, will visit Trail’s End at night to observe and document the spiders in the preserve.  \nSchedule:\n	Saturday\, October 5th: 3 pm – 9 pm\n	Sunday\, October 6th: 11 am – 4 pm \nJames Wagner is a Professor of Biology at Transylvania University. He has been studying the behavioral ecology of insects and spiders for the last 25 years. His research has been highlighted on a Discover Magazine segment for The Discovery Channel and on an episode of Weird\, True and Freaky on Animal Planet. In 2001\, he was named Kentucky Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. \nWorkshop Cancellation/Refund Policy: To cancel your registration and request a refund\, please email info@floracliff.org at least 3 weeks before the event.
