Hands-on activities and discussion will enhance the use of literature-based environmental education and correlations to English and Language Arts Kentucky Academic Standards. This educator workshop will be held outside\, so come prepared to hike around and use the outdoors as your classroom! Please bring your lunch and plenty of water for the day.

SUMMARY:Birds of Kentucky
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dr. David Brown\, Eastern Kentucky University \nHiking Level: Moderate  \nThis is a beginning to intermediate field-based birding workshop. The emphasis will be on identifying birds by sound\, but of course we’ll see lots of birds\, too. The workshop will include a hands-on bird banding demonstration on Saturday morning. All participants will receive a Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America. Field trips will include Floracliff Nature Sanctuary and Taylor Fork Ecological Area in Madison County. This workshop is limited to 12 participants. \nDavid Brown is an Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology at Eastern Kentucky University. He teaches Field Ornithology and Wetland Wildlife Management. His research focuses on conservation and the winter ecology of migratory songbirds.

SUMMARY:Revisiting Floracliff’s Old Oaks: A TreeSnap Training and Citizen Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Dr. Ellen Crocker (UK)\, Beverly James (Floracliff) \nHiking Level: Moderate to Difficult \nFloracliff is home to some of the oldest known trees in Kentucky. This Fall marks the 10th anniversary of the research project that “discovered” these old chinkapin oaks through dendrochronology. For this workshop\, we will be revisiting these revered oaks and submitting updated measurements and observations to TreeSnap. TreeSnap is an app for foresters\, landowners\, and citizen scientists to easily record information about trees and share that data with scientists. Scientists are using this information to aid research projects focusing on genetic diversity and the factors that allow some individual trees to survive. Participants will be trained to use TreeSnap and will learn about the characteristics of old trees\, the uniqueness of Floracliff’s old trees\, and their significance to the region. \nThis event is part of the Urban Forest Initiative’s Tree Week.

SUMMARY:Discovering Kentucky's Biodiversity with iNaturalist: A Citizen Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you love documenting plants and animals and keeping up with your own life lists? Do you take a lot of plant and animal pictures on your smart phone or digital camera? If so\, join iNaturalist and its numerous Kentucky based projects that are available for documenting biodiversity in the state. Need training? Come to Floracliff! With this training\, you will learn how to use the app and desktop version of iNaturalist to document plants and animals indoors\, and then get out in the field to use your new skills. You will get tips on what kinds of pictures to take\, and also learn how this information is used to further our understanding of the distribution and conservation of species in our state. SUMMARY:Land Snails of Kentucky: A Citizen Science Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Dan and Judy Dourson \nHiking Level: Moderate \nAre you a kid at heart that loves looking for treasure and exploring the great state of Kentucky? Do you like learning about the lesser known\, least understood organisms that support our ecosystems? Are you detail-oriented? The Kentucky Statewide Land Snail Biodiversity Project needs YOU! \nThe Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves and Dourson Biological Consulting are conducting an 18-month project to survey the land snail species of Kentucky\, update existing records and determine the status of land snail species in the state. This project seeks the collaboration and cooperation from a wide variety of sources across the state including biologists\, teachers\, land managers\, park naturalists and most importantly\, CITIZEN SCIENTISTS who are interested in contributing to a scientific study of a lesser known group of organisms that are the building blocks of the ecosystems.  \nFloracliff will be hosting this workshop to introduce the project\, discuss the importance of land snails\, habitat selection and collection techniques.
