SUMMARY:Hike: Creative Reflections at Elk Lick Creek
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a full hour immersed in the sights and sounds of Elk Lick Creek to write\, create\, meditate\, or just enjoy the sights and sounds of nature. This program offers the opportunity to slow down\, connect to nature\, and disconnect from electronic devices. At the end of the hike\, participants will have a chance to share as much or as little as they like. \nBring: water\, a pad to sit on\, journal/sketchbook and writing/drawing materials. Please leave your cameras at home for this program. \nHike Leader: Floracliff naturalists \nHiking level: Moderate (due to steep\, uneven terrain) \nPlease note: Bathrooms and facilities are currently closed to visitors. Please come prepared.  This hike will host no more than 10 participants. \nCOVID-19 SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND GUIDELINES UPDATE: As of Tuesday\, April 27th\, the state of Kentucky as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has updated guidelines for small outdoor gatherings. Kentucky no longer requires a mask be worn outdoors for events of fewer than 1000 people. The CDC states the risk of COVID-19 spread is low in outdoor settings\, but also continues to recommend masks in settings where physical distance cannot be maintained. \nIn response to the current guidance\, Floracliff will not require fully-vaccinated individuals to wear masks during outdoor programs as long as adequate physical distance (6-feet) can be maintained between others outside of one’s household/pod. Floracliff continues to recommend unvaccinated individuals wear a mask throughout all programs\, especially when adequate physical distance cannot be maintained between others outside of one’s household/pod. \nAll program participants and Floracliff representatives\, both fully-vaccinated and unvaccinated\, should have a mask available during programs in the case that adequate physical distance cannot be maintained. We are happy to provide one to you if necessary. \n*These guidelines are subject to change at any time according to current state and CDC guidance. \nRefund Policy: Refunds are permitted for cancellations made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event. To request a refund\, email info@floracliff.org. \n

SUMMARY:City Nature Challenge 2021: Lexington
DESCRIPTION:Floracliff is thrilled to bring the City Nature Challenge to Lexington. The City Nature Challenge is a global community science event that mobilizes urban residents and visitors to observe\, document\, and celebrate the wild plants\, animals\, and fungi in and around urban areas. This focused and collective effort increases our awareness and understanding of urban biodiversity around the world. \nThe City Nature Challenge began in 2016 and is organized annually by the California Academy of Sciences and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. In its first year\, the CNC was a competition between San Francisco and Los Angeles to document wild biodiversity in urban areas using iNaturalist. It has since grown to over 300 participating cities in 40 countries. \nCity Nature Challenge 2021: Lexington will take place April 30th – May 3rd throughout Fayette County. Lexington residents and visitors are encouraged to photograph the wild nature around them and upload those photographs to iNaturalist. If you are within Fayette County\, your observations will automatically be added to the project. All identification skill levels are welcome. If you do not know what you are looking at\, it’s okay! Be sure to take and submit clear\, detailed photos so the iNaturalist community can contribute identifications. \nThere are many wild plants\, animals\, fungi\, and more to be found throughout Lexington. Together\, we can discover\, document\, and share Lexington’s biodiversity! \nTo join us at Floracliff for a City Nature Challenge event\, see our events page here: floracliff.org/events/ \nInformation about daily and 4-day challenges\, with chances to win prizes. \nIf you represent a community group that is interested in participating in the City Nature Challenge\, please email Beverly James\, bjames@floracliff.org\, to confirm your participation and partnership.\n \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Webinar: Classifying Nature after Linnaeus: Charles Darwin’s Insight Changes the Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Presented by: Rob Paratley\, University of Kentucky \nA famous 20th Century evolutionary biologist said\, “Nothing makes sense in biology except in the light of evolution.”   In this webinar with Rob Paratley\, we will see just how true this sweeping statement is\, as we explore one of Charles Darwin’s great insights in his groundbreaking Origin of Species\, the book that introduced the world to biological evolution.  Among Darwin’s many original ideas is one often overlooked- his direct connection between the reality that species change over time and the pattern of diversity we see in Nature. \n“Classifications are not passive ordering devices in a world objectively divided into obvious categories\,” the evolutionary biologist Stephan J. Gould once said\,  “Objective Nature does exist\, but we can converse with her only through the structure of our taxonomic systems.” \nThat conversation has been going on as long as there have been humans\, and there are as many such conversations with Nature as there are groups of people.  Rob’s presentation begins in 18th Century Sweden with botanist Carl Linnaeus\, the so-called “Father of Taxonomy” (the science of classifying Nature).  Linnaeus’ conversation with Nature\, the How and What of Nature’s diversity\, are with us yet today\, but he and those that followed left unanswered the questions of Why.  Why is Nature patterned the way that Linnaeus first saw?  What causes natural groups?  What does natural affinity actually mean?  Religious men and creationists\, the best they could do was to invoke the plan of the Deity. \nThis changed forever with Darwin’s Great Taxonomic Insight.  Rob will discuss how Darwin’s evolutionary thinking changed forever the way we converse with Nature.  We will look how Darwin reasoned his way to connecting the patterns that taxonomy reveals\, that Linnaeus had spelled out\, with the process of species changing across time.   Natural affinity\, Darwin realized\, is the result of common descent. \nWe will then explore how the field of classification\, the modern conversations with Nature\, were  shaped by evolution.  At first broad and somewhat haltingly\, evolutionary thinking in classification science (now called Systematics) developed by the late 20th Century into a powerful tool for discovering and understanding natural relationships. \nA link to the webinar will be emailed to all registered participants on the day before the event for early registrants and 2 hours before the event for those that register on the same day. \nRefund Policy: Refunds are permitted for cancellations made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event. To request a refund\, email info@floracliff.org.
